Kelso and further afieldLochton is 4 miles from the picturesque and historical town of Kelso, "the most beautiful if not the most romantic town in Scotland", wrote Sir Walter Scott. Set at the meeting of the Tweed and Teviot Rivers, Kelso with its cobbled square and historic Abbey, has delightful local shops, places to eat and interesting walks. Floors Castle, Scotland's largest inhabited house stands to the north of the town on the banks of the Tweed. Floors is one of the many stately homes - Mellerstain, Paxton, Manderston, Thirlstane, Bowhill and Traquair, within the Scottish Borders. Visit the historic Abbeys at Jedburgh, Melrose and Dryburgh, delight in the panoramic viewsof the Borders from historic Smailholm Tower. Border towns have their own blend of character and charm; find local specialities, crafts and woollen bargains in small, independent and often family-run shops. Enjoy cycling and driving on the quiet scenic roads. Explore the rocky caves, the wildlife sanctuaries and the beaches of the Berwickshire and Northumberland coasts, while inland you may picnic or walk in the beautiful river valleys of the Cheviot Hills. For the more adventurous visit Glentress Mountain Biking Centre, walk the Southern Upland or St Cuthberts Way. There are great local golf courses, (try the Freedom of the Fairways pass), pony trekking and riding centres, enjoy racing at Kelso Race Course (voted Friendliest Course of the Year). Indulge your appetite; there is a great selection of bistros, pubs (some with live music), and restaurants using our superb local produce. Walk to our local from Lochton! There is so much to see and do in the Scottish Borders, come and discover for yourself.
